The State of Alaska
Alaska, known as the Last Frontier, is located in the most northwestern portion of the North American continent. It shares no physical border with the United States and is bordered by several seas and Canada on its eastern edge. It is the largest state in area but is the third least populated. The state's territory was originally purchased by the U.S. government in 1867 from Russia and was added to the union as the 49th state in 1959. About five hundred miles separate Alaska from the U.S. border.
The state's capitol city, Juneau, is located in the Alaskan panhandle and is has the second highest population after Anchorage. Juneau has no roads connecting it the the Lower 48 states or to the rest of the continent because of very difficult topography. Transportation in and out of the city of Juneau is conducted by sea or air. Approximately 32,000 people reside in Juneau. By contrast, the first and third most populated cities, Anchorage and Fairbanks, have almost 300,000 and 30,000 residents, respectively. Juneau's population can increase by several thousand people throughout the summer months due to visitors from cruise ships.
Alaska's great area means that the climate can very drastically from the northern portions and the southern. The interior of the state is classified as subartic. and has the greatest extremes in temperature, from 100 degrees Fahrenheit to a record breaking -80 degrees. Due to its location on the Pacific Rim, Alaska is prone to earthquakes that can result in landslides and tsunamis.
Many native peoples reside in Alaska, and are significant enough that the major languages are added to the state's roster of official languages. Colonization by Russia and Europeans has also added to the diversity of the state.
Alaska's economy boomed originally with the discovery of gold in the 19th century, prompting an Alaskan gold rush that inspired the writings of American author Jack London. in the middle of the 20th century, the discovery of oil in Alaska led to a huge boom in oil production. Alaska's biodiversity and native lands are a subject of much controversy between conservationists and developers. Alaska's fishing industry, which has been the subject of popular reality TV shows, is a huge part of the state's exports after oil and gas. Military bases in the state and the logging industry also make up a huge part of the state's economy.
Residents in Alaska enjoy access to all national cellular carriers, but due to environmental conditions or other factors some people may be unable to get good cellular coverage.
