The City of Detroit

The city of Detroit is the biggest city by population in Michigan and the biggest on the U.S.-Canadian border. It is also the seat of Wayne County. it is the 21st biggest city by population in the United States. The metro area surrounding Detroit has 4.3 million people, and is the second biggest city in the Midwest after Chicago. The city was founded by the French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac on the Detroit River in 1701, where it is a major port. Its proximity to the Great Lakes straits connect it to the Saint Lawrence Seaway, thus shipping and transportation have always been important to the commerce of the city. It was long known as a center for industrial industries and manufacturing, especially for the auto industry, leading to the nickname Motor City. It is also known for its music culture, leading to different sounds like Motown and techno, and important innovations in music, especially jazz and rock.

The mound-building culture inhabited the area, and then later the Huron, Odawa, Powatomi and Iroquois. Europeans came in the 1630s, and the Beaver Wars were fought over hunting access to the many beaver-rich waters in the area. Detroit was named by the French inhabiting the area, meaning the Detroit River, which in French is le détroit du lac Érie (the strait of Lake Erie) that linked Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Detroit was founded by Aintoine de la Mothe Cadillac and fifty-one French and French Canadians and called Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, after the Minister of Marine under Louis XIV. Detroit was the capital of Michigan territory before statehood. The city was incorporated in 1815. in 1903, Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler, Packard, Dodge, and Durant followed suit, making Detroit the automotive capital of the world. This boom helped Detroit become the 4th largest city in 1920. Its position as a gateway to Canada helped illegal bootleggers smuggle in alcohol during Prohibition. It hit its peak population in the 1950s and loss of manufacturing jobs resulted in a decline ever since.

It is the biggest city in Metro Detroit, and Southeast Michigan. It is considered part of the Midwest and the Great Lakes region. It has a humid continental climate which is greatly impacted by the presence of the Great Lakes. Winters are cold and get snowfall annually, with over forty days in winter that do not get above freezing. Summers are typically warm but can occasionally have days in the 90s. The area gets precipitation throughout the year but gets the most in May and June, and spring and summer are prone to stormy weather.

Detroit is home to three Fortune 500 companies. General Motors, Quicken Loans, Ally Financial, Compuware, Little Caesars, DTE Energy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Rossetti Architects are all based there. Manufacturing with a special emphasis in automotive is the top industry, followed by finance, technology, and health care. The music industry has been important to the city since the 1940s and Motown Records brought new sounds to the 1960s and 1970s from artists like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, and the Jackson 5. The city has many well known museums like the Detroit Historical Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Science Center, and the Detroit Public Library's main campus. Other points of interest are the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Detroit Zoo, the Henry Ford Hospital, and the Cranbrook Art Museum.
