The City of Forth Worth

Fort Worth is a city in the north central part of Texas and the county seat of Tarrant County. It was founded in 1849. Originally it was an Army base overlooking the Trinity River. It is home to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and world-renowned museums like the Kimball Art Museum and the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, as well as the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.

The city was founded as a fort to help protect the American frontier in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War. Fort Worth is known as "Where the West Begins." It was a stop on the Chisholm Trail that was part of the cattle industry. The Fort Worth Stockyards still emphasize the importance of the city's dependence on cattle and ranching to this day. This is why Fort Worth is known as "Cowtown." Railroads connecting the city to other important centers of commerce grew the population, and helped ship cattle to other places in the country. It was known as a rowdy town with many saloons and brothels, and was associated with debauchery and crime. Oil fields discovered in West Texas in the beginning of the 20th century and after in the 1970s helped bring about oil booms in the city, along with natural gas deposits. American Airlines is headquartered there, and GE Transportation will be establishing its locomotive production there in 2018. It is also home to several international corporations such as Bell Helicopter, Lockheed Martin, BNSF Railway, Pier 1 Imports, XTO Energy, and Radio Shack.

The city is in North Texas and has a humid subtropical climate. It is centered in the transitional Cross Timbers region between the forested east and the hills and prairies of the Grand Prairie ecoregion. Part of the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex, the combined metropolitan statistical area has several million residents and is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States over the past twenty years. Lake Worth was formed by damming part of the Trinity River in 1914. It position in Tornado Alley makes it very prone to tornadoes and severe weather like the rest of North Texas, with supercell and severe thunderstorms. The city gets about 34 inches of precipitation a year, most of which falls in May. Snowfall is usually less than 3 inches a year. It has long hot muggy summers and mild winters.
