The State of Iowa
The Hawkeye State was originally settled by the Ioway people, after whom Iowa is named. Prior to statehood it was considered part of French and Spanish Louisiana. Early colonists grew grain crops there, which continues to today. Iowa became a state in 1846, adding the 29th star to the American flag.
Residents of Iowa live in a humid continental climate throughout the entire state, which is characterized by big swings in temperature variance. Iowa can have severe weather, and has about 50 days of thunderstorms per year, as well as about 47 tornadoes per year. Summers there are often very hot and humid.
Traditionally a farming state, the advent of the railroads increased manufacturing and trade in the state. Iowa's factories create refrigerators, food products, fountain pens, and washing machines. A farming crisis caused a localized economic depression in the 1980s and efforts to diversify the state's economy have proved successful. Newer industries include biotechnology, financial services, and insurance. The population in Iowa has grown significantly. Once a rural state, most of its populations is now labeled urban. Attractions in Iowa include the Iowa State Fair, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, and the Des Moines Botanical Garden.
Residents in Iowa have access to all national cellular carriers, but due to environmental conditions or other factors some people may not have full access to decent cellular coverage. If you live or work in the Hawkeye State and are having connectivity issues, it may not be your carrier’s fault.
