The City of Memphis

Memphis is a city in Tennessee that is the county seat of Shelby County. It was built just south of where the Wolf and Mississippi Rivers come together. It had a population of voer 650,000 in 2016, and is the second largest city in the state after Nashville. Its greater metro area is home to over 1.3 million people. It was founded in 1819 and named after Memphis, Egypt. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi.

The area has been inhabited for ages; early evidence shows the Mississippian Culture lived there in the 1 AD. Later, Chickasaw lived on the same site. European explorers came through in the 1500s. Its position on the river made it an important strategic place to control for European expansion. The city was incorporated 7 years after its founding. Its raised location on the bluffs kept it from flooding, and it quickly rose in importance for its position as a transportation hub for goods and a place to stock up before heading further west. The cotton economy of the South helped the town to boom, helped along by the development of the railroads connecting Memphis to other places in the nation. It joined the Confederacy when Tennessee seceded from the United States. In the 1870s, yellow fever epidemics decimated the city's population. By the turn of the century, Memphis had the world's largest cotton market and hardwood lumber market. It was also the biggest center for mules up until the 1950s. By 1950, the city had almost 400,000 residents. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. Memphis is known for its strong musical culture, with Elvis Presely, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Isaac Hayes, Justin Timberlake, and Aretha Franklin all having ties to the city.

It is in the southwest part of Tennessee. Its metro area covers part of Arkansas,  and northern Mississippi. The Memphis Riverfront borders the Mississippi River from the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park to the T.O. Fuller State Park. It has a humid subtropical climate and winter weather is influenced by the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Plains, which can have dramatic effects on the local temperatures. Summers very hot and muggy, and afternoon and evening thunderstorms are very common in the summer. Autumn is nice and dry, and cooler, but occasionally hot well into October; late autumn is typically cooler and rainy and lead into mild or chilly winters with occasional snowfall. Ice storms and freezing rain are more problematic and occur more frequently. Severe thunderstorms can happen year round, especially in spring, and bring hail, damaging winds, lightning, flooding, and occasionally tornadoes.

Intersected by two major highways, the I-40 and the I-55, and its location on the navigable Mississippi make Memphis an important trade hub for transportation and distribution of goods across the nation. River barges operate and unload onto trucks and trains. The Memphis International Airport is the world's second busiest cargo airport outside of Hong Kong. It's also the hub for FedEx. Other major corporations include: Allenberg Cotton, American Residential Services, Cargill Cotton, City Gear, Fred's, GTx, Lenny's Sub Shop, Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, True Temper Sports, Varsity Brands, and Verso paper, as well as Gibson guitars and Smith & Nephew. Tourism to the city for special events like Memphis in May and the Beal Street Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which is the biggest pork barbecue contest in the world, are popular.
