The State of North Carolina

North Carolina sits on the Eastern seaboard bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and South Carolina and Georgia in the south,  Virginia to the north, and Tennessee in the west. Native Americans first settled in the area around 1,000 BCE. When settled by the English, North Carolina and South Carolina together were referred to as The Province of Carolina. One of the most mysterious stories about early American history is the lost colony of Roanoke, which still attracts tourists to this day.

North Carolina has a lot to see. For hikers and campers the mountainous western part of the state is especially attractive. The Blue Ridge Mountains in particular are a favorite destination. The state’s beaches also attract thousands of visitors every year for surf and sun, while history and architecture lovers can find plenty to see and do in Asheville, Raleigh, and other cities. Donut lovers can go visit the home of Krispy Kreme. Art lovers can find a lot to love and learn at the North Carolina Museum of Art or the city of Seagrove, which has the honor of being the United States’ handmade pottery capital.

The Tar Heel State has a very diversified economy and is a leader in the region for industry and agriculture. It also produces a lot of hydroelectric power. It’s agricultural sector is primarily based around tobacco, sweet potatoes, pork, fisheries, and poultry. Pork is especially important for the state’s preferred form of barbecue. It is also the second highest producer of Christmas trees. Education is also important to North Carolina; in fact, the oldest public university in the U.S. is the University of North Carolina, founded in 1795.
