The State of Ohio
Named after the Iroquois word for "big creek," Ohio is a Midwest state. Also a Great Lakes state, Ohio is bordered by Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky on the American side. Ontario in Canada sits across its northern border. The seventh most populous state in the Union is Ohio. Located in the Great Lakes region of the United States, Ohio is known for being the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents, as well as having immense importance in elections as a swing state.
Ohio became the 17th state in 1803. Before the entrance of Europeans to the region, the inhabitants of the state included tribes who would later become known as the Shawnee, Ottawas, Iroquois, and Eries, as well as many others like the Delaware who'd been pushed out of their original homes by the Iroquois, other tribes, or European colonists. Archaeological evidence shows that the area of Ohio was home to humans dating as far back as 13,000 B.C.
The climate of Ohio is mainly a humid continental climate, with the exception of the southern part of the state in its Bluegrass region which is the northernmost part of the humid subtropical section. The rural Appalachians contrast the flatter western state's glaciated till plains. The state rests in the Snow Belt and can get significant lake-effect snowfall from Lake Erie. Severe weather events can happen within the state's borders, with flooding of its rivers and common tornadoes capable of causing occasional destruction.
Ohio's position on the Great Lakes and its situation between the East and Western parts of the United States makes it an important hub for transportation of goods. As a result, transportation makes a significant impact on the state's revenue, as the state rests half-way to most other states in the Lower 48 and has easy access to about 70% of the nation's manufacturing. Lake Erie also gives the state access to the Atlantic through the St. Lawrence Seaway. It also has a strong emphasis on bioscience sector, making it a leader in “green” goods. In addition to its manufacturing, transportation, and education economies, Ohio also has rich lands for agriculture. Agriculture in its plains produces a large amount of sugar beets. The state also boasts five of the nation’s top universities and five international airports.
