The State of Oregon
Oregon is a state in America's Pacific Northwest. It is neighbored by Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and is flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is the ninth largest state in area. Salem is Oregon's capitol city.
In the days before European exploration and subsequent settlement, Oregon was home to many different Native American tribes. These included the Chinook, Coquille, Molalla, Nez Perce, Tillamook, and Umpqua, as well as many others. Spanish explorers first sighted the coast of Oregon in the 16th century. British and Spanish explorers followed, as well as French fur trappers and missionaries. Lewis and Clark built a fort there in 1805. The Oregon Territory became the 33rd state in 1859.
The state is divided by the Cascades. West of the mountains, the state has an oceanic climate. The wet weather of the west supports many forests. In the southwest region of the state, a Mediterranean climate like that in northern California is dominant. East of the mountains, the rain shadow effect creates a drier climate. the eastern part of Oregon is semiarid or arid, and as far less rain than the western part. It has very dry summers and snowy winters. The northeastern part of the state has a steppe climate, while higher elevations are categorized as having a subartic climate. The Willamette Valley experiences much more mild winters than the rest of the state.
Oregon's economy could be divided up into a few main sectors, which are: agriculture, fisheries and forestry, tourism, manufacturing, and technology. The state's farms are very well known for their production of blueberries, which can total up to over 100 million pounds a year. The state also produces cranberries, and due to similarities in soil and climate to Alsace and Burgundy, wine grapes do well there. Almost 700 wineries operate in Oregon today. The state's vasts forests spurred its growth and importance, but a shift towards producing paper goods and materials for building as well as mismanagement of its forests has dropped its timber production considerably. However, it is still a leader in production of lumber within the United States. Rural economies have been hit hard by the decline in the timber industry, however. Fisheries in the state focus primarily on salmon. Technology based in the "Silicon Forest" has driven employment since the 1970s. Nike and Adidas both have headquarters in the state, as does Columbia sportswear. These and several other corporate headquarters are big employers, as is the federal government. Oregon's scenic beauty with its many forests, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, deserts, and coastline drive a lot of the state's tourism. Outdoor recreation in the state is very popular, and the arts and culture districts in Portland especially draw music lovers and museum goers.
Beaver State denizens enjoy access to all national cellular carriers, but due to environmental conditions or other factors some people may not have full access to decent cellular coverage. If you live or work in Oregon and are having connectivity issues, it may not be your carrier’s fault. If you need to Boost Your Bars, check out cell phone signal amplifier kits from HiBoost.
