The City of San Diego
San Diego is the eighth biggest city in the United States and the second largest in California. It was named after Saint Didacus. It is 120 miles south of L.A. and on next to the Mexican border. It is home to 1.4 million people and with its transborder agglomeration between it and Tijuana, it has just under 5 million residents. It is the seat of San Diego County and the commercial center of the San Diego-Tijuana metro area.
It was home to the Kumeyaay peoples and the first place visited by European explorers on the West Coast. It is called the birthplace of California because it had the first European settlement built in 1769. In 1821, the city became part of Mexico after it gained its independence from Spain, and then a part of the U.S. after it became a state.
San Diego has the San Diego Bay, which makes it a natural port and harbor. It is surrounded by the Laguna Mountains and Peninsular Ranges. It sits across 200 or so deep canyons and hills, which many mesas separate. This gives it a hilly topography. The mesas have many of the houses, and thus the city is broken up by these canyon wildernesses. The San Diego River runs east to west through the city and creates a river valley that divides the city into northern and souther halves. Land features of note include the Cowles Mountain, Black Mountain, Mount Soledad, and Guyamaca Mountains and Laguna Mountains, along with the Cleveland National Forest. The climate in San Diego varies due to microclimates caused by its hilly topography and the Bay. Throughout May and June a "marine layer" cloud keeps the air cool and damp within a few miles of the coast, and clears up to sunshine further inland. The city gets about ten inches of rain a year.
San Diego's proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its natural deep-water harbor made it a natural choice as a center of shipping and for the naval presence built. It has the only prominent major submarine and shipbuilding yards on the West Coast. Several major companies related to the industry are General Atomics, Cubic, and NASSCO.. The city is home to the largest naval fleet in the world. The main sectors in San Diego's economy are defense and military operations, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The University of California, San Diego campus and its Medical Center have helped the city emerge as a major player in biotechnology as well. Due to its sunny climate and many beaches, tourism is naturally an important sector as well. City attractions include Balboa Park, Belmont amusement park, the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, the Mission San Diego de Alcala ad the local craft brewing industry.
