The District of Columbia
Originally inhabited by Algonquian-speaking tribes the City of Washington was founded in 1791. The District was created from the previous towns of Georgetown and Alexandria and sits on the Potomac River. Maryland and Virginia donated land from their territories to create a federal district (Virginia's portion was later given back in 1846). The Constitution gives instructions for it to be controlled by Congress, which is why the District of Columbia is not counted as one of the states in the Union.
Currently, D.C. is home to some 680,000+ individuals. This count grows to over a million people during the work week due to commuters from Maryland and Virginia. The metropolitan area surrounding the Capitol is the sixth biggest metropolitan area in the nation, with over 6 million residents.
As the nation's capitol city, the federal government is seated in D.C. with all three branches of the government represented. In addition to the business of running the nation, which is the primary source of jobs, D.C. draws many visitors and tourists due to its high concentration of historic sites and monuments on the National Mall. In fact, tourism is the second largest industry, drawing nearly 19 million visitors a year. The District of Columbia is truly cosmopolitan, with over 176 foreign embassies based there. In addition, sports fans can enjoy teams representing all four major league sports. Washington, D.C., is also an important center for printed news and television media, with many national media and cable TV companies headquartered there. Whether you're living, working, or visiting the District, there is a lot to do.
Residents and employees in our nation's capitol enjoy access to all national cellular carriers, but due to environmental conditions or other factors some people may not have full access to decent cellular coverage. If you live or work in the Capitol and are having connectivity issues, it may not be your carrier’s fault. If you need to Boost Your Bars, check out cell phone signal amplifier kits from HiBoost.
